One of the rarest oils in the world, Argan oil is truly unique and is beneficial as both a health and beauty aid. Also known as “Liquid Gold” and “The Gold of Morocco”, does Argan oil live up to the hype? Yes!

How Argan Oil is Produced

Did you know that it can take anywhere from 10 to as much as 20 hours to harvest just 1 liter of this precious oil? That is because Argan oil is still harvested by hand by the Berber women of Morocco (scroll down to see what Essence of Argan is doing for these hard working, industrious women). The fruits of the Argan tree, first, must be be collected. Then there is a hard shell that must be cracked open to release just a few kernels. These kernels are mashed in handmade stone mill along with some water which results in a dough like substance. This dough is then repeatedly kneaded and finally cold pressed to release the precious golden liquid contained within.

The Argan Tree and UNESCO

The Argan tree is an evergreen that can live as long as 450 years. It primarily grows in the semi arid southwestern part of Morocco. The United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization has been protecting the Argan tree since 1999. This is because agricultural uses have left it endangered. As a result, over 2 and a half million hectares of land have been set aside by UNESCO as protected lands.

You will be happy to know that all of our products are Eco-Certified as we work to ensure that Argan oil will be available to future generations.

Argan Oil Is Improving The Social Position Of The Berber Woman

Fair trade cooperatives are helping to improve working conditions for Berber women. Some women who need more time to care for their families are allowed to work half days while still receiving fair wages. Most importantly, they are guaranteed good working conditions. We are proud to support the Berber women and the 3 million people whose livelihood depend on the production of Argan oil. The economic and social status of the Berber women has been improved greatly by these fair trade cooperatives, and they have benefited the Argan tree as well by working to protect Argan forests.

Why Argan Oil is An Expensive Oil

There is nothing quite like Argan oil. Its health benefits even exceed other precious oils like olive oil and coconut oil. Many even proclaim the rich flavor of Argan oil to be preferred over olive oil. And its benefits for hair are said to be even greater than the benefits of coconut oil (see “Argan Oil for Hair” for more details). Between the rarity or the tree and the painstaking process involved in producing Argan oil, it is no wonder that it is a rare and valuable oil. The health and beauty benefits it produces have left it in high demand. It is time for you to give this most unique oil a try, and find out why it is hailed as “liquid gold” for yourself.
